Configuring synonyms
Use the Configure Synonym page to define terms that are similar to each other.
Note: This topic is only relevant if your store uses the enhanced search feature. See How to enable enhanced search for more information.

Required Role: Search Manager This Global Commerce user role allows users access to the enhanced search feature.
This role is available in both Big Blue and Global Commerce. If you have this role in one of these systems, you can access this feature.
- Select Storefront, select Search Configuration and then click Configure Synonyms.
-
To define your synonyms, in the text field on the page, enter your synonym definitions. Each synonym definition should be on its own line.
You can define the following synonym types:
-
Referring synonyms—These terms all refer to each other. Separate these terms with commas.
Example: If you enter "big, large, huge" and a shopper searches for one of these terms, the search will return any of these terms in the search results.
-
Replacement synonyms—These terms refer to another term (or set of terms). Separate these terms with "=>". You can specify multiple words on either side of the "=>".
Note: Use caution when defining these synonyms with multiple terms as the relationship is one-way.
Example: If you specify "huge => big, large", and a shopper searches for "huge", the system returns "big" or "large" in the search results. However, the system would not return "huge" in the search results even if you "huge" appeared in the product name.
The system replaces the words on the left side of the "=>" with words on the right side in the search results. The words on the left are words you think users will enter in the search field. The words on the right are associated with your products (or the words you want users to use when a shopper searches for your products).
Note: Use care when defining replacement synonyms. Do not use terms in replacement synonyms that are part of the product name or other core product attributes as this could affect the shoppers’ ability to find those products in your store.
Tip: Use single words or terms when defining synonyms. Using phrases as synonyms could produce undesirable results.
