A subscription is a product that a shopper renews on a recurring basis, such as every week, month, or year.
Example: If you configure the subscription to renew every year, the system charges the shopper and the shopper continues to have access to (and may receive updates for) that product every year.
- On the storefront
- Once shoppers purchase the subscription on your store
See Subscription for more information.
When a subscription renews, the system charges the shopper the same price they paid when they initially purchased the subscription. If you want to charge a different price, you must create a special renewal price list and specify the renewal price for the product. Subscription renewal price lists allow you to customize your renewal prices for subscription products.
If you want to create a subscription renewal price list, create a new price list and select the subscription renewal type. Once you create a renewal price list (and activate it), the system charges the renewals with the price you defined in the renewal price list.
Site setting for renewal pricing
You can use a site setting called Renewal Price List Limitation in Days to control the price you charge a shopper for the renewal of their subscription. Use this setting when one of the following statements is true:
- You have multiple renewal-price lists
- Your renewal price list has an end date that occurs before a subscription is due to renew
Use the Auto Renew option to indicate whether you want the subscription to automatically renew (and bill the shopper) when the subscription expires.
- If you do not select this option, the subscription will expire unless the shopper renews the subscription themselves using the self-service options.
- If you select this option, Digital River will try to renew the subscription based on the information you provided for the 1st - 3rd Billing Attempt Prior to Expiration option.
To learn how subscriptions renew, see How subscription renewal works.
You can use the Enable Customer Service Save setting to open a window that prompts the Customer Service Representative to entice the customer to keep their subscription.
Example: A shopper calls Customer Service to cancel the automatic billing for their subscription. While the Customer Service Representative processes the request, a window prompts the Customer Service Representative to offer the shopper a free extension if they keep the automatic billing for their subscription.
If the customer accepts the offer, the system does not cancel the auto renew and adds the extension to the current subscription period. Use this option to help retain more automatic renewal subscription customers and ensure renewal revenue continues for months to come.
